One of the joys of Jean-Philippe Dion is to bring together people who, over the weekend, discover unsuspected similarities. Mission accomplished for Francine Ruel, Sonny and Erik Caouette from the duo 2Frères and Jean-Charles Lajoie, who have confirmed that, despite appearances, they have much in common.
Here are 10 behind-the-scenes secrets from the eighth episode of True Nature:
A GIRLS HOUSE
As always in the workshop, it was a matter of childhood. In Ruels there were five girls. To know if a man had come to the house, it was enough to check if the toilet seat was up, something that never happened otherwise! Francine’s mother was a hairdresser and hosted “cut and cake” evenings for the men. The girls invited their lovers and friends, and they got haircuts while eating cake! Men were welcome in this house.
The 2Frères were predestined to become musicians. His own parents had a band of the music of the time. Also, there were speakers throughout the house and the radio played 24 hours a day, even at night! Her mother suffered from insomnia, and that was what helped her fall asleep. The whole family lived at this rate! Erik says that’s why he knows almost all the lyrics of the songs from that time. He and Sonny shared the same room and every night at 10:20 p.m. they always listened to the same Allan Theo song. Every night they prepared to listen to him: he had become a joke for them!
DO YOU TREAT EIGHT YEARS OLD?
In third year of elementary school, Sonny was suspected of drug dealing! One day he came home from school and told his grandmother that he had been met by the school principal, who told her that he was a drug dealer. He didn’t even know what that meant! All because his mom gave him apple cider pills, which were supposed to burn fat. Sonny, who wanted to share these things with his chubby friends, was bringing tablets to school and handing them out!
We brought great emotions to Jean-Charles, who said he had a fixation on hockey when he was young. He would lock himself in his room for hours to play; he had created a hockey game out of cards. Each card represented a player. We reproduce that in the studio; He couldn’t get over it! Finding that out 40 years later plunged him back into his childhood and was very moving.
NOT THE VOCATION!
I realize that convent stories often get people talking true nature. Let’s just say that the nuns didn’t always seem well prepared to teach! In Francine’s case, her parents were separated because her father had left home, and the nuns seemed to judge this situation. They were mean to Francine and her sisters. Despite everything, Francine was told that she could become a good nun. One night she dreamed that God was calling her and hung up the phone. She deduced that she had no vocation!
LIFE AS A NOVEL
We will discover the life of Jean-Charles Lajoie this Sunday. It is a true novel! Since his biological father never acknowledged his paternity, he was taken under the wing of his maternal grandfather, who had accepted his daughter as a single mother. Jean-Charles somehow became the brother of his mother’s brothers; he was raised as the fourteenth child in the family. He was later adopted by his mother’s lover, and that’s how he became Lajoie.
Jean-Charles and Francine discovered that they had many things in common, including a father who abandoned the family. In addition, both had to mourn a son. In the case of Jean-Charles, it is the mourning of a deceased child. For Francine, she must mourn a living child. I discovered that Francine is an extremely demanding woman with herself. She doesn’t want to bother people with her problems. She hid the story of her son, Etienne, for a long time, changing the subject as soon as we asked her about it. We sense in her a desire to figure things out on her own, but she seems to put a lot on her shoulders. Sometimes, it happens that we want to manage everything when in reality there is not much manageable.
SHOCKED YOUNG DADS
The children were at the center of the discussions. Francine and Jean-Charles have experienced great pain as parents, and these stories have completely upset Erik and Sonny, who are young parents. They couldn’t imagine living in situations like theirs! We also discussed with them the subject of fatherhood. We understand that the touring life of two young artists who are experiencing incredible success can leave you feeling like you’re not there enough for your kids. In fact, we truly feel that children are at the center of our guests’ concerns.
A TOUCHING SURPRISE
We surprised Francine with a video of Guylaine Tremblay, who will play her role, Anna, in the television adaptation of her novel Anna and the older boy. The actress recorded a note for Francine. Viewers will see this surprise on the show!
In the kitchen, Francine told us for the first time about her son’s accident, after I had shown her an excerpt from Ladle. She told us that when she was filming this scene, her son was between life and death in the hospital. She returned to work to complete the shoot. She only had angry scenes to film, which was perfect, because she was angry at life! She also starred Diva, which has become a cult series. One day she met Xavier Dolan, who told her that the ringtone on his cell phone was from one of her scenes in Diva! She loved his character and knew his lines by heart! Xavier told her that he would like to shoot a scene like this with her one day. Of course, this is something Francine would like very much.
